One of my favorite lessons from Nepal was a lesson on praying for the little things. There was a young woman who had come to Lama Wangdu as she wanted a boyfriend. Lama Wangdu began saying prayers and healing this woman.
I do my best to be open minded and non judgy, but I'm a judgy little bitch. Truth. Working on it. Totally awesome knowing areas where I can grow! Anyhow, so I turned to the Tibetan nun and asked why the woman would bother the Lama over something so insignificant as a boyfriend. (Told you I was judgy). The nun says to me, "Oh but this is one of my favorite things about Tibetan Buddhism!" She goes on to explain that anything that comes between us and our practice is something that needs healing.
If you are on your path for your best life and you get distracted by something, it needs healing. It needs prayer. Stop judging yourself for stumbling blocks, distractions, hesitations.
Anything that comes between you and your spiritual practice needs prayer.
Let's take it a step further though. Instead of looking to prayer for only stumbling blocks, distractions, and hesitations, what if we incorporated all of our life. This thought was triggered when in one of my devotionals the day was focused on Friendships Are Precious. With longing, I thought I need some local friendships that are precious. As soon as I finished that thought, I realized that I should incorporate these precious friends into my daily prayers.
What if I prayed for my friends that have yet crossed paths with me? What if prayed for the goals that I am working to achieve? What if I prayed over my obsession with ice cream? (If you've known me for a while, the Mountain Dew obsession transferred to ice cream.)
Feel free to trade the word prayer for heal, meditation, journey, etc... Each one works as each one is bringing a spiritual wholeness to our lives.
I pray today that you might find hope in a new place.
