I will admit that at first I find St. Benedict's rule to be just rules. I can't see how this brings you closer to God. But I know that smarter, more saintly people have found deep spiritual fulfilment in it and so I trust that I am missing something.
And the more I dig in, the more I see that I missing something. I'm still not there.
This was my first book and it is a simple listing of the rules. So let me share my highlights:
"'If you hear his voice today, do not harden your heart' -then he must put all else aside and follow the teaching of Christ in obedience." page 11-12
"'First and foremost, there must be no word or sign of the evil grumbling, no manifestation of it for any reason at all'" page 12
"...there are times when good words are to be left unsaid out of esteem for silence." page 31
I need to work on being silent more especially when it is good words.
"All my desires are known to you..." page 34
"...Pursue not your lusts." page 34
It is crazy how obsessed I can become by my lusts. Clothes, books, ice cream...
"After sparing us for a while because he is a loving father who waits for us to improve..." page 34
"We read, after all, that our holy Fathers, energetic as they were, did all this in a single day. Let us hope that we, lukewarm as we are, can achieve it in a whole week." page 47
"On arising for the Work of God, they will quietly encourage each other, for the sleepy like to make excuses." page 49
Sleepy like to make excuses! When I get tired, I somehow forget to the stuff that's important to me.
"...let the incoming reader ask all to pray for him so that God may shield him from the spirit of vanity." page 60
"For nothing is so inconsistent with the life of any Christian as overindulgence. Our Lord says: Take care that your hearts are not weighed down with overindulgence." page 62
"...so arrange everything that the strong have something to yearn for and the weak nothing to run from." page 88
Oh and dude, if you have any experience with his topic please share your heart on it!
