I am working through The Early Church study from Ascension Press and wanted to share something that I love:
"Defending the Faith
Just as the early Church grappled with those who had departed from the Faith, so we must be ready to reach out to inactive or 'lapsed' Catholics who need to experience God's healing and reconciliation. Ultimately, it is the Holy Spirit who draws these mend and women back to the Church. But when we pray, the Holy Spirit can work through us to do amazing things. Remember...
- Silence is golden. If your friend 'vents' in anger or frustration, do not argue. Acknowledge his or her pain, even when it is self-inflicted. Always speak the truth in love.
- Tend your own garden. Our primary focus should be on our own growth in virtue, rather than another's faults. Loving humility allows simple truth to shine through doubt and confusion.
- Do not be afraid. If you do not know an answer, say so-then go and find it. Read the Catechism, talk to your paster, visit your local Catholic bookstore or church library, or check out online resources, such as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website, USCCB.org. The answers you find may enrich your own spiritual walk as much as your friend's.
- Persist. Invite your friend to parish activities, and 'journey' alongside him or her. Give him or her helpful books or DVDs. Above all, pray for your friend daily!" page 48 from workbook
